  My experience fishing with JJ Brown as my guide was the highlight of my recent 10-day trip to Alaska - a trip I have been dreaming about since I was a teenager (I'm 72). I had a private fishing trip with JJ Brown as my guide for a full day - from 7 a.m. to mid-afternoon. He picked me up at my accommodations in Cooper Landing and he was on-time and ready to fish. Aboard the boat, he demonstrated extensive experience handling the boat. Most importantly, he knew where the fish were. He took me to many pools, all of which were fruitful, and was communicative with me about our plans. He'd even position the boat so it was easy for me to cast. I caught dozens of fish that day - trout and salmon - all while taking a beautiful trip through Kenai Canyon and going through Class 2 rapids. JJ answered all my questions, was happy to take pictures of each and every fish I caught, supplied me with quality equipment (non-leaking waders), and I thought he was a good man who became a friend by the end of the trip.   Our trip with JJ at Kenai River Trout Anglers on 8/17/21 was an absolute bucket list trip. JJ picked us up at our cabin and brought us to the Kenai River. He wasted no time in showing us a great spot to floss for Salmon and was incredibly helpful in teaching us the technique, while also sharing facts about the river, wildlife and the overall area. His compassion for the fish was very refreshing. We had 8 hours on the river and caught SO many beautiful fish. Alaska alone has been an enchanting vacation but this trip with JJ today was one the best adventures of a lifetime! If we return to Alaska, we will most certainly book another trip. We would give 10 stars if we could! Thanks again, JJ!

  While we enjoyed the trip and the guide (Matt), we felt like the opportunity for us to catch much more fish (especially salmon) was there but somewhat prevented by the guide's fish conservation/activist mentality. For example, my husband caught what Matt said was a "legendary-sized" Dolly, but didn't even allow my husband to touch the fish when it was reeled-in and had me take a photo of HIM (the guide) holding the fish instead. We were in a Salmon hole for maybe 5-minutes, caught one and he wanted to immediately move down the river instead of giving us the choice to try for another. Last, a very small dolly practically jumped in the boat as it was being reeled, and my husband and I laughed in shock... Matt shook his head and said "it's actually not funny, that a concussion for the fish". We saw photos online of customers holding their own fish and having their limits on fish-count. Though we know nobody can guarantee how many fish, we just felt like our guide could have been more accommodating in the way he provided/encouraged the possibility for more fish.

  Had an awesome day of fishing with Matt. He put us on some epic fish in really difficult conditions. Would highly recommend Kenai river trout anglers and will be using them again on my next trip to Alaska.

  JJ is great - we caught a ton of fish despite high water on the river and late in the season. Good boat and gear as well

  The Upper Kenai is the best part of the river for catching Rainbows and Dolly Varden especially as the King and Sockeye are spawning. Visibility of spawning fish and beauty of Alaska all around. We did 3 days with JJ and had a great time. He was prepared, professional, and knew how to get fish on. I came in with little fly fishing experience and learned so much.

  We fished 3 full days with KRTA with JJ as our guide and had a phenomenal time. Pre-trip booking and communication was attentive and super easy. We fished the Upper and Canyon sections 2 days and the Upper-Upper and Upper sections the 3rd day. Only 20 outfitters have permits to guide the Upper and Canyon sections of the Kenai so make sure your guide has a permit if you want to fish those sections. This is one of the reasons that we specifically chose KRTA. JJ put us on the fish all day, everyday. The bead bite had just turned on and between the 3 of us we landed over 100 fish per day, mostly rainbows and Dollys with some sockeye, pinks, silvers and whitefish. There were a number of times when two or all three of us were hooked up at the same time. The action was pretty consistent and some areas were absolutely on fire. Of course, YMMV. We fished with fly rods almost exclusively and two in our group had very little to no fly fishing experience. JJ provided the guidance to make sure we all were able to properly present our flies/beads to the fish. JJ is extremely knowledgeable, easy going, hardworking, personable, accommodating and treated us like we were old friends. He went above and beyond to make sure we had an excellent experience everyday. Of course, it's would be hard not to have a great time with all the action we had. I have absolutely no reservations recommending JJ and KRTA to anyone. I look forward to fishing with him again.

  JJ was an awesome guide for us on the Kenai River. He provided us all the equipment we would need including waders. He picked us up at our location in the morning too. We did a combination of fishing from the boat with lures, and flossing the salmon in our waders. We caught 3 huge salmon, and a bunch of trout (though trout are catch & release). He made the day a lot of fun for us and is really friendly & knows the river. Another highlight was all the bald eagles we saw along the Kenai- very cool.

  We were planning on taking a once in a lifetime trip with our fish loving kids to have them fly fish on the Kenai River. COVID 19 changed all of that. Most of our Alaska travel arrangements required us to transfer our payments to 2021 or be penalized; JJ didn't hesitate to ensure we could get a refund if we wanted. For a small independent business, this was not my expectation. With JJ, I am not surprised. When we were planning our trip in late 2019, he was responsive to questions, accommodating to our itinerary and ensured that our tween aged kids would be well taken care of. Other friends wanted to join us as well and JJ made sure we would have a private party with enough guides to help those with less experience fishing. This booking experience was easier than the professional travel agencies I had to deal with for Alaska planning I had no hesitation rolling my reservation over to 2021 and am excited to fish with JJ and his crew. Thank you JJ!

  Our family had a great trip. We saw lots of wildlife and safety floated the river and caught lots of fish. Hopefully we will be back soon.
